The earliest work in the series, and the one that gives it historical depth: forty-three years separate it from the São Paulo balcony in The Wait, yet the subject is the same. Its strength grew out of a failure—the resident noticed the camera and stepped back, and the artist took a single shot, convinced she had lost the image. Her retreat created the black background against which the face appears without a body. The photograph records a refusal and honors it, preserving the distance that was asked for.
“The solitude of someone who watches the world go by because they long for contact, want to take part in some way, but from inside their home.”
