It opens the series with a question rather than an answer: the lamp switched on before dark signals the presence of a resident, while the open doorway refuses to reveal them. Its strength lies in a decision almost no one would make. On revisiting the image, the artist discovered that the halo around the lamp had not been present in the scene—it was an effect produced by the camera, on an evening that was still light—and chose to keep it. After fifty years of technical control, accepting that the camera added what became essential requires a rare confidence.
