The work in which the question is given a face—and the face offers no identity in return, only an attitude.
Its strength lies in an editing decision: the artist had previously published another frame from the same sequence and, on revisiting it for the series, replaced it with this one, sharper and with the sense of waiting more clearly expressed. The wall does half the work: the green and yellow cover an earlier blue that still shows through, and this layering gives the image a depth of time that the scene alone would not have had.
“She has the same attitude of waiting. She really is waiting—perhaps even more so than in the other shot.”
Goya · Édouard Manet · Helen Levitt → Luiza Whitaker
