The most generous work in the series, and the one that corrects it. Someone is alone among many, just as in the other works, yet solitude here is not deprivation but autonomy. A field of empty metal chairs, scattered in disarray, awaits an audience that has yet to arrive, and within it a single man has a task. It is also the only work made with consent — the sweeper noticed the camera and did not alter his behavior; he neither posed nor interrupted his gesture. Of fifteen works made with deliberate discretion, this is the only one in which photographer and subject acknowledge one another.
“The dignity of having one’s work and being one’s own master”
