The most essential image in the series, because both the trace and its erasure are contained within the frame: the footprints are proof that someone passed through; the incoming tide is the certainty that the evidence will be erased. Between one and the other, the photograph. Its quiet power lies in having been made on a day of farewell, and in speaking, without saying so, of what remains when someone leaves. If a single image had to define What Remains, this would be it.
