The winter counterpart to Traces of Yesterday, and the most atmospheric work in the series: the haze builds plane upon plane, each a paler shade of gray, until it dissolves. Its strength lies in the layer of time it adds — snow upon snow, older tracks still visible beneath the new — and in the human meaning the artist gives it: the path ahead is her children setting out into the world. She arrived at the aesthetics of sumi-e by her own route, on returning from Japan.
“I take photographs of paths stretching ahead quite often. To me, this one speaks of that moment when your children are beginning to take off into lives of their own.”
