A cadeira vazia · Van Gogh → Luiza Whitaker

The image that gives the series its fullest meaning, and the one in which the trace ceases to belong to others and becomes her own. Its strength lies in its restraint at the most difficult moment: nothing in it surprised the artist, because it was made to be exactly what it is — an empty wheelchair dissolving into the light, the shape of a presence about to leave. The empty chair as a portrait of someone who is no longer there belongs to one of art’s most moving traditions; here, it is a daughter’s farewell. It is the only honest way to end.
“Make the most of the time while people are still here. Love them deeply, stay with them as long as you can. Because it ends, because it passes — and then all that remains is the longing.”
