Ernst Haas · Saul Leiter → Luiza Whitaker

The work in which the surface between the camera and the city stops getting in the way and starts working for the image: condensation on the windshield creates a haze that turns brake lights into broad streaks. Its strength lies in the sustained incompatibility — the upper half is governed by absolute geometric rigor, while the lower half does not contain a single straight line. And there was nothing accidental about it: the artist anticipated the effect and took the photograph because of it.
“You can find beauty in anything. In absolutely anything.”
Ernst Haas · Saul Leiter → Luiza Whitaker
